Return to Oz (1985)

Return to Oz is special because it dares to treat childhood wonder as something fierce, strange, and real—an honest fairy tale with shadows in the corners. Walter Murch builds a hauntingly beautiful Oz out of tactile practical effects and storybook nightmare imagery, and Fairuza Balk’s Dorothy gives the film a grounded courage that makes the fantasy feel earned rather than cute. The vibe is dreamlike and unsettling, closer to L. Frank Baum’s sharper-edged imagination than to candy-colored nostalgia, with unforgettable creatures and a sense of peril that keeps the adventure humming. It’s not the pick for very young kids or anyone expecting light whimsy, but if you want a family fantasy that respects your intelligence and still knows how to astonish, this cult classic is a marvel.

Return to Oz is clearly trying to be a more faithful, storybook-sequel to Baum’s books, swapping the cheerful musical glow for a strange, dream-logic quest through a broken Oz. That ambition is admirable, but be warned: the film is chilly, bleak, and often more unsettling than entertaining, with imagery (the hospital opening, Mombi’s heads, the Wheelers, the Nome King) that can feel downright nightmare-fuel for kids and surprisingly joyless for adults expecting whimsy. The pacing can come off mechanical and emotionally distant, so if you want warmth, humor, or that “homey” magic of the 1939 classic, this probably isn’t your Oz. If, however, you like dark fantasy with practical effects, oddball creatures, and a genuinely eerie atmosphere, it’s a distinctive cult curiosity worth a look.
