The Cursed (2021)

What makes The Cursed special is how it treats horror like a serious period drama—muddy, mournful, and gorgeous in a way that feels carved out of old folklore rather than assembled from jump scares. Sean Ellis shoots the 19th‑century countryside with painterly dread, letting fog, firelight, and silence do as much damage as any creature in the dark, while Boyd Holbrook and Kelly Reilly ground the escalating terror with performances that feel human and bruised. The film’s real thrill is its fresh, unsettling spin on werewolf mythology, unfolding with the patience of a mystery and the bite of a nightmare. It’s not a breezy monster romp—this one is grim, atmospheric, and slow-burning—but if you want horror that lingers on your skin like cold air, it’s absolutely worth the walk into the woods.

The Cursed is clearly aiming for a classy, old-world gothic horror—muddy villages, moral rot, and a creeping sense of dread rather than cheap jump scares. The problem is it takes its sweet time getting anywhere, and the script feels like it’s juggling too many ideas without giving the characters enough depth to make you truly care. When the “sinister presence” finally needs to land, the creature work and CGI can look undercooked, which deflates the tension, and the ending may leave you feeling more exhausted than satisfied.
