Phyllida Lloyd directs with a steady, compassionate hand, and Clare Dunne gives a performance so lived-in and quietly fierce that you don’t just root for Sandra—you feel the weight she’s been carrying and the relief of every small victory. The film’s vibe is grounded and humane, finding real warmth in the way strangers become a lifeline, without turning hardship into a speech or a slogan. It’s not an easy watch given its focus on domestic abuse and the systems that trap people, but if you can handle that subject matter, it’s deeply moving in the way it insists that rebuilding a home can also mean rebuilding a self.

Herself is clearly aiming for a grounded, crowd-pleasing story about a woman rebuilding her life after abuse, and it’s at its best when it focuses on Sandra’s grit and the small, practical kindnesses of the people around her. The problem is it often leans on familiar “uplift” beats and tidy schematics, so the emotional turns can feel pre-packaged rather than earned, with a few tonal shifts that pull you out of the realism. Domestic abuse is central and not just background texture, so if that’s a sensitive topic for you, this may be more draining than inspiring. If you can accept some clichés in exchange for a strong lead performance and an earnest community-spirit message, it’s worth a look; if you want sharper writing and a more confident landing, you may leave underwhelmed.
