VFW (2019)

Stephen Lang, Martin Kove, and William Sadler bring a lived-in toughness that makes the camaraderie feel real, so when the siege begins, you’re not just watching carnage—you’re rooting for a last stand. Fair warning: the gore is severe and the vibe is nasty and relentless, but if you want a lean, mean thriller with old-school energy and a little extra heft under the splatter, this one delivers.

VFW is clearly aiming for a scrappy, neon-grimy throwback: a siege movie where battered veterans turn a dive bar into a last-stand fortress against cartoonishly vicious punks. When it works, it’s thanks to the old-pro cast (Stephen Lang in particular) and the blunt, no-nonsense momentum that keeps things moving toward the next ugly confrontation. But don’t expect much nuance, suspense craftsmanship, or a premise that deepens as it goes—this is mostly loud, mean, and extremely gory, with a slapdash feel that can make the mayhem blur together instead of building to something memorable. If you’re not specifically in the mood for grindhouse-style violence and simple, one-location carnage, this will feel like a lot of blood for not much payoff.
