Film Fest (2020)

Film Fest is special because it loves the indie-film circus even as it gently roasts it, delivering a warm, 90s-flavored comedy-drama about the strange little ecosystems where dreams, delusions, and deadline panic all share the same badge lanyard. Marshall Cook captures that festival vibe—the forced networking, the fragile egos, the sincere hope—without turning anyone into a cartoon, and Matt Cook and Diona Reasonover make the central push-and-pull feel human beneath the jokes. It’s the kind of movie that can make you laugh at how ridiculous the scene is, then catch you off guard with a note of tenderness for why people keep showing up anyway. If you’ve ever loved (or hated) film culture, it’s a charming, satirical reminder that the hustle can be silly and still mean everything.

Film Fest is clearly aiming for an affectionate, inside-baseball comedy about indie filmmaking—part 90s nostalgia, part satire of festival egos—and it does have a few knowing laughs if you’ve lived in that world. The problem is that the “throwback” vibe can feel more like an excuse for familiar clichés and self-referential winks than a story with real momentum, so if you’re not already amused by film-festival stereotypes, it may drag. The tone also wobbles between heartfelt underdog drama and broad caricature, which can make the characters feel more like sketches than people you’re invested in. If you like niche industry comedies and don’t mind a scrappy, low-stakes ride, you’ll find some charm here; if you want sharper writing, bigger emotional payoff, or humor that lands without film-nerd context, this probably isn’t your festival.
