The Owners (2020)

The Owners is the kind of lean, mean thriller that grabs you by the collar with a simple setup and then keeps tightening the vise, turning a “quick score” into a nerve-fraying battle of wills inside a house that feels alive with bad intentions. Julius Berg sustains a nasty, pulpy momentum, letting dread seep in through locked doors, hidden spaces, and the creeping realization that the most fragile-looking people in the room might be the most dangerous. Maisie Williams brings a grounded, human urgency amid the panic, while Sylvester McCoy and Rita Tushingham are deliciously unsettling, weaponizing politeness and age into something truly sinister. It’s not for the squeamish—there’s real brutality here—but if you like your horror-thrillers tense, twisty, and unapologetically grim, this one delivers.

The Owners wants to be a nasty little home-invasion thriller where the powerless become predators, and it does deliver a tense setup with a few sharp reversals and a committed turn from Maisie Williams. The problem is it leans so hard into cruelty and shock mechanics that it can feel mean-spirited rather than suspenseful, with characters making contrived, illogical choices just to keep the mayhem moving. If you’re hoping for a clever mystery that adds up, or a horror film with emotional payoff, this may leave you cold and slightly annoyed. But if you can tolerate strong violence and you mainly want a grim, twisty pressure-cooker in a creepy house, it’s serviceable for a late-night watch.
