Break (2019)

Break takes a simple, primal setup—a handful of friends suspended in a stalled funicular over an abyss—and squeezes it until it becomes pure, nerve-tight suspense. What starts with the buzz of a New Year’s Eve adventure turns into a claustrophobic pressure cooker where the cold bites, the altitude taunts, and every decision feels like it costs something, pushing the characters to reveal who they really are when comfort and certainty vanish. Director Tigran Sahakyan keeps the vibe lean and relentless, leaning on atmosphere and escalating tension rather than flashy tricks, with a cast that sells the panic and the fractures that follow. If you like thrillers that trade jump-scare excess for survival dread and messy human conflict (and don’t mind frequent strong language), this is an efficiently nasty ride that’s hard to shake.

Break (2019) is clearly aiming for a tight, claustrophobic survival thriller: trap a group of young adults in a dangling funicular, crank up the cold and panic, and let human nature do the rest. The problem is the execution leans more on shouting, bickering, and familiar “people turn on each other” beats than genuinely smart escalation, so if you need sharp character work or fresh twists, you may feel stranded long before the characters do. The dialogue can be pretty coarse and relentless, and the tension often comes from interpersonal nastiness rather than inventive horror. Still, if you’re in the mood for a straightforward, contained “stuck in one place” nightmare with a decent height-and-exposure premise, it can scratch that itch—just don’t expect it to rise above B-movie intensity.
