NiNoKuni (2019)

NiNoKuni is the kind of animated fantasy that wins you over on sheer atmosphere: a shimmering, Ghibli-tinged storybook world that feels inviting the moment you step into it. It follows three friends pulled between parallel realities, and while the stakes are real, the movie keeps a pleasantly breezy, heartfelt tone that makes the adventure easy to sink into. The action and romance thread through the journey without turning it grim, letting the beautiful animation do much of the emotional heavy lifting. It’s not the most complex fantasy you’ll ever see, but if you’re on the fence and want an enjoyable, visually soothing quest with a sincere pulse, this is an easy yes.

NiNoKuni is clearly aiming for a heartfelt, Ghibli-adjacent fantasy romance with parallel worlds, big stakes, and a “choose what matters most” moral at the center. The problem is it often feels like a whole season of story crammed into one film: character beats rush by, rules of the world get fuzzy, and the drama leans on convenience rather than earned emotion. The animation can be lovely in traditional moments, but the CGI clashes hard enough to pull you out of scenes, and the pacing leaves little room for wonder to land. If you’re a fan of the game or you just want a lightweight, pretty fantasy ride, you may still enjoy it—but if you’re expecting deep worldbuilding, consistent visuals, or a truly moving adventure, this will likely feel mediocre and messy.
