The Night House (2021)

At the center is Rebecca Hall, giving a raw, darkly funny, utterly human performance that makes every shiver matter because it’s tethered to real sorrow and stubborn survival. It’s a slow-burn, mood-forward nightmare that rewards attention, so if you want constant shocks it may feel patient—but if you like your mysteries unsettling and your horror emotionally sharp, this one lingers.

The Night House is aiming for a grief-soaked, cerebral haunted-house mystery where the real horror is the void left behind, and it absolutely nails the mood thanks to David Bruckner’s eerie staging and a terrific, raw performance from Rebecca Hall. The problem is that the story keeps piling on clues and supernatural rules in a way that can feel more tangled than intriguing, with exposition that doesn’t always land and pacing that occasionally drifts when it should tighten the screws. If you want clean mythology, clear answers, and a punchy, satisfying payoff, this may leave you irritated rather than scared. But if you’re happy to sit in dread, enjoy unsettling imagery, and can forgive a murky resolution for the sake of atmosphere, it’s a solid late-night watch.
