Voyagers (2021)

Voyagers takes a classic sci-fi setup—a sealed ship, a fragile mission, a future riding on young shoulders—and turns it into a tense, unnervingly human pressure-cooker about what happens when control gives way to instinct. Neil Burger keeps the film moving with a clean, tactile sense of space and design that makes the Humanitas feel both sleek and claustrophobic, while Tye Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp, and Fionn Whitehead bring real, lived-in emotion to characters who were literally engineered to behave. The vibe is part coming-of-age, part social experiment, part thriller, with paranoia and power plays tightening like a vice as the veneer of order starts to crack. It’s not for viewers who want their science fiction purely cerebral or who are sensitive to themes of sexual aggression, but if you like your genre films glossy, tense, and willing to ask what “civilization” is really made of, this one sticks in the mind.

Voyagers is clearly trying to mash up a slick space mission with a “what happens when the rules disappear?” coming-of-age breakdown, and the setup has real potential. The problem is it plays out like a very familiar Lord of the Flies remix in a spaceship, with predictable turns, thin character work, and big themes (control, consent, human nature) that it gestures at but doesn’t dig into. The pacing can feel oddly sluggish for a thriller, and the PG-13 treatment makes the descent into chaos feel a bit sanitized rather than truly unsettling. If you’re here for a tense, idea-rich sci-fi drama, you may leave underfed, but if you just want a straightforward, watchable space morality tale with a solid young cast and clean production, it’s serviceable.
