Reinaldo Marcus Green keeps the film grounded in the rhythms of family life—early mornings, hard choices, small victories—while Will Smith gives Richard Williams a performance full of humor, steel, and vulnerability that makes you understand the man even when you don’t agree with him. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor brings quiet power as Brandy, the film’s steady heartbeat, and the ensemble makes Compton feel lived-in rather than mythologized, with tennis scenes that crackle with nerves instead of glossy triumph. It’s inspirational without being sugary, though if you’re allergic to earnest sports dramas or PG-13 intensity, it may not be your match; for everyone else, it’s the kind of crowd-pleaser that earns its uplift.

King Richard is clearly aiming to be an uplifting, crowd-pleasing origin story about grit, family discipline, and betting on a plan when nobody else will. Will Smith brings charisma and drive, and the film does a solid job making the tennis world feel intimidating without turning it into misery porn. But it’s also a long, sometimes repetitive watch that can feel a bit too protective of Richard Williams, sanding down the sharper edges that might’ve made the drama more honest and unpredictable.
