Shock Wave 2 (2020)

Shock Wave 2 is the kind of big-city action thriller that still believes in craft: practical-feeling mayhem, clean geography, and set pieces staged with the confidence of a filmmaker who knows exactly how to build tension and then detonate it. Andy Lau gives the chaos a human center, playing a wounded bomb disposal officer whose fractured memory turns every chase and confrontation into a question of identity as much as survival, while Herman Yau keeps Hong Kong humming with urgency and dread. The movie moves like a fuse you can hear hissing—relentless, propulsive, and escalating toward a finale that earns its scale. It does get enjoyably twisty and a bit convoluted, so if you need airtight logic over momentum you may hesitate, but if you want old-school, high-octane spectacle with real stakes, it’s an easy ticket to punch.

Shock Wave 2 is clearly aiming for a big, glossy Hong Kong disaster-thriller: high-stakes bomb set pieces, a tormented hero, and enough twists to keep you guessing. The problem is it treats its own increasingly implausible turns with such grave seriousness that the story can feel like a patchwork of amnesia, betrayals, and flashbacks rather than a clean, propulsive ride. If you’re the type who needs logic to hold up under scrutiny, or you get impatient with heavy exposition and “wait for the next reveal” plotting, this will likely wear you down. Still, Andy Lau brings real commitment, and when the movie stops explaining itself and just does action, it’s genuinely tense and well-mounted.
