Kakegurui: The Movie (2019)

Kakegurui: The Movie is special because it turns high-school hierarchy into a glittering battlefield of nerve, deception, and pure theatrical style, where every gamble feels like a character test under hot stage lights. Director Tsutomu Hanabusa leans into an elegant, pop-art slickness—bold colors, sharp editing, and a mischievous sense of humor—that makes the whole thing play like a thriller with a wicked grin. Minami Hamabe’s Yumeko is the engine: unpredictable, charismatic, and so delighted by risk that you can’t look away, even when you’re not sure you’d want to sit at her table. If you’re allergic to heightened, anime-like intensity and bigger-than-life performances, it may be too much—but if you want a lively, witty rush with real bite beneath the gloss, it’s a terrific bet.

Kakegurui: The Movie wants to be a glossy, over-the-top mind-game thriller where gambling is basically a contact sport, and it commits hard to that anime-style intensity. The catch is that it’s more about wild faces, melodrama, and heightened school politics than grounded mystery or clever, airtight twists, so if you’re expecting a tight psychological thriller you may find it loud and a bit repetitive. The tone is deliberately cartoonish and campy, which can be a blast if you’re in on the joke, but it can also feel like everyone’s performing at volume 11 for two hours.
