The Guilty (2021)

The Guilty is a high-wire thriller that proves you don’t need car chases or sprawling set pieces to feel your pulse in your throat—just a phone line, a ticking clock, and Jake Gyllenhaal turning a cramped 911 dispatch desk into an emotional pressure cooker. Antoine Fuqua keeps the film lean and urgent, letting every voice on the other end of the call paint a world you can’t see but can vividly imagine, so the tension lives in your mind as much as on the screen. It’s intense, talky, and deliberately claustrophobic, the kind of movie that dares you to look away even though almost everything happens in a single room. If you like thrillers that are more about moral panic and human fracture than action spectacle, this one grabs hard and doesn’t let go.

The Guilty is clearly aiming for a real-time, phone-call thriller that traps you in one room and lets tension do the heavy lifting, with Jake Gyllenhaal going full-throttle to sell the panic and guilt. The problem is that it often feels like it’s straining for intensity rather than earning it, and the emotional beats can come off a bit blunt, especially if you’re hoping for subtle character work. If you’ve seen (or love) the 2018 Danish original, this remake may feel like a louder, less necessary repeat rather than a fresh take. Still, if you want a tightly contained, performance-driven pressure cooker and don’t mind heavy subject matter delivered at high volume, it can be an effective one-sitting watch.
