Triggered (2020)

Triggered takes a gloriously nasty high-concept hook and lights it like a fuse: a group of friends wake up in the woods with bombs on their chests and the clock instantly turns their petty resentments into life-or-death arithmetic. It’s a lean, no-nonsense ride that keeps moving, balancing splattery, “did they really just do that?” violence with a darkly comic, self-aware edge that makes the dialogue snap and the tension feel wickedly playful. The movie’s real pleasure is its momentum—every choice escalates, every alliance feels provisional, and the whole thing hums with mean-spirited ingenuity. If you’re squeamish or looking for elevated, moody horror, this may be too blunt an instrument, but if you want an enjoyable, vicious thriller that knows exactly what kind of fun it is, Triggered earns its title.

Triggered is clearly aiming for a nasty, high-concept survival horror ride, using the ticking-clock bomb setup to force friends into moral collapse and bloody choices. The problem is the film rarely earns the tension: the characters are thin and often hard to care about, so the “who lives, who dies” stakes feel more mechanical than gripping. Between predictable turns, clunky dialogue, and performances that can come off flat, it plays more like a rough draft of a better movie, with some distracting technical roughness (lighting and dubbing) pulling you out of it. If you enjoy mean-spirited, low-budget gore with a simple gimmick and don’t need strong acting or character work, you might still get some trashy fun; otherwise, this will likely test your patience.
