Blue Beetle (2023)

Blue Beetle works because it remembers that the best superhero stories start small and human: a young man, a stressed family, and a life that’s not going according to plan—until an alien Scarab drops into the middle of it. Xolo Maridueña makes Jaime Reyes instantly likable, and the film’s humor and warmth come less from quips than from the lived-in, culturally specific chaos of a family that loves loud and fights for each other. Director Ángel Manuel Soto gives the action a bright, punchy comic-book energy, with slick biomechanical visuals that feel tactile and fun rather than generic CGI noise. It’s not the darkest or most revolutionary caped outing, but if you want a superhero movie with real heart, a fresh voice, and a crowd-pleasing sense of adventure, this one earns your time.

Blue Beetle is clearly aiming to be a heartfelt, family-first superhero origin with a Latino cultural lens and a scrappy underdog vibe, and when it leans into that warmth it genuinely works. The problem is the movie’s skeleton is painfully familiar: the beats, the jokes, and the big corporate-baddie setup play like a checklist of things you’ve seen in better comic-book films. The villains in particular feel more functional than fascinating, which drains tension from the action no matter how flashy the suit is. If you’re burned out on formulaic origin stories or need a fresh twist to stay engaged, this one may feel like reheated leftovers—but if you mainly want an earnest crowd-pleaser with likable characters and a strong family dynamic, it’s an easy enough watch.
