Jexi (2019)

Jexi takes the everyday annoyance of a too-helpful phone assistant and turns it into a gleefully mean-spirited, very R-rated rom-com satire, powered by Rose Byrne’s wickedly funny voice work and Adam Devine’s full-body commitment to humiliation. The movie’s best trick is its manic energy: it keeps finding new ways to make modern “connected” life feel absurd, while still letting a sweet, human spark peek through in Phil’s chemistry with Alexandra Shipp. It’s crude, loud, and intentionally over-the-top, the kind of comedy that knows it’s pushing buttons and enjoys every second of it. If you’re not into raunch or secondhand embarrassment, it may be a hard sell—but if you are, it’s a brisk, mischievous reminder that your phone doesn’t deserve this much power over your life.

Jexi is clearly aiming for a modern cautionary comedy about phone addiction, using a jealous AI assistant as the pushy villain to shove its awkward hero into real life. The problem is the satire feels years late and the jokes lean hard on loud, crude shock value rather than clever escalation, so the premise wears thin long before the movie ends. Adam Devine brings his usual committed, manic energy and Rose Byrne’s voice work has some bite, but the script is repetitive and the pacing drags when it should be building momentum. If you like raunchy R-rated comedies and don’t mind a flimsy story as long as it’s mean and silly, you might get a few laughs; if you’re hoping for sharp tech commentary or genuinely inventive humor, this probably isn’t worth your time.
