The Green Knight (2021)

The Green Knight is the rare fantasy film that feels like a spell: not a ride for escapism, but a dream you walk through, heavy with meaning and menace. David Lowery turns Arthurian legend into a haunting, painterly odyssey where every foggy forest, candlelit hall, and strange encounter seems to whisper a question about courage, honor, and the stories we tell ourselves to feel brave. Dev Patel is terrific as Gawain, capturing both his swagger and his fear with a human immediacy that makes the myth feel personal, while the sound and imagery build an atmosphere you can practically taste. It’s deliberate, eerie, and more art-house than action-adventure—so if you need constant momentum it may test your patience—but if you’re open to a bold, original fable, it’s unforgettable.

The Green Knight is clearly aiming for a moody, mythic coming-of-age fable rather than a rousing Arthurian action romp, and it commits hard to atmosphere, symbolism, and moral unease. If you want clear answers, brisk pacing, and big heroic payoffs, this will likely feel slow, cryptic, and occasionally self-indulgent, with long stretches where “vibes” replace plot momentum. The storytelling is deliberately ambiguous and dreamlike, so you’re meant to sit with uncertainty instead of being guided through neat explanations. That said, Dev Patel is compelling, the imagery is striking, and if you enjoy art-house fantasy that feels like a haunted poem, it can be quietly powerful.
