Days of the Whale feels special because it treats graffiti not as background texture, but as a living language—one that can flirt, dream, and finally dare to speak back to power. Set in a vibrant Medellín that the camera captures with seductive immediacy, the film moves with the pulse of its soundtrack and the restless momentum of youth, making every alleyway and rooftop feel charged with possibility. Laura Tobón Ochoa and David Escallón Orrego bring an unforced naturalism to Cristina and Simón, so their bond and their bravery land as something intimate rather than movie-mythic. It does drift in a loose, slice-of-life rhythm at times, but if you’re open to a drama that’s more about mood, community, and the cost of defiance than tidy plot mechanics, it’s an exhilarating, quietly fierce watch.

Days of the Whale is clearly aiming for a grounded, youthful portrait of Medellín’s graffiti scene, using one bold mural as a spark for a coming-of-age story about love, fear, and defiance. The problem is it can feel more like a mood piece than a tightly driven drama, with a simple central conflict stretched out and characters who may read as more symbolic than deeply explored. If you’re expecting a fast, plot-heavy thriller about gangs and retaliation, this will likely feel subdued and occasionally repetitive, even when the stakes are serious. That said, the film’s biggest strength is its atmosphere: the street-level authenticity, the art-as-resistance angle, and the sense of place give it a quiet pull if you’re in the mood for something patient and reflective (and yes, it earns that TV-MA rating with tense, violent undertones).
