Falling (2020)

Falling is the kind of intimate, bruisingly human drama that earns its power the honest way: through lived-in details, quiet observation, and two towering performances that feel less like acting than like history resurfacing. Viggo Mortensen’s directorial debut is beautifully composed and deeply sensitive without sanding down the rough edges, capturing the ache of family love when it’s tangled up with pride, aging, and words you can’t take back. Lance Henriksen is mesmerizing as a father whose mind and manners are both hardening with time, while Mortensen gives him a son’s patient devotion that’s always on the verge of breaking. Be warned, it’s not a comfort watch—the language is harsh and the clashes can be emotionally abrasive—but if you’re open to a film that sits with pain long enough to find something like grace, it’s quietly unforgettable.

Falling is clearly trying to be an intimate, unsparing look at family duty, aging, and the kind of generational damage that doesn’t wrap itself up neatly, and you can feel Viggo Mortensen aiming for honesty over comfort. The problem is it often plays like an endurance test: long stretches of hostility and repetition, with pacing that can feel punishing and a dynamic so abrasive you may never fully buy why John keeps subjecting himself to it. If you need emotional variety, catharsis, or a character you can actually root for, this may leave you drained rather than moved—especially given the frequent harsh language and bigotry from the father. That said, Lance Henriksen’s performance is raw and lived-in, and if you’re specifically drawn to bleak, actor-driven family dramas that don’t soften the edges, it might land for you.
