Wrong Turn (2021)
Jen and a group of friends set out to hike the Appalachian Trail. Despite warnings to stick to the trail, the hikers stray off course—and cross into land inhabited by The Foundation, a hidden community of mountain dwellers who use deadly means to protect their way of life.
What people think about Wrong Turn
Wrong Turn (2021) is special because it doesn’t just recycle backwoods-slasher mechanics—it drags the franchise into meaner, smarter territory, where the horror comes from a whole worldview, not just what’s lurking behind a tree. Mike P. Nelson shoots the Appalachian wilderness with a gritty, tactile dread, and when the violence hits it’s gnarly and unflinching, the kind that makes you wince because it feels dangerously close. Charlotte Vega anchors the film with a survivalist intensity that keeps the suspense personal even as the story widens into something more unsettling and timely. It’s not for the squeamish and it’s definitely not a cozy popcorn scare, but if you want a brutal thriller with palpable tension and a bold swing at bigger ideas, this one earns the detour.
Wrong Turn (2021) is clearly trying to reboot the franchise into something bigger than a backwoods slasher, swapping simple “wrong place, wrong time” carnage for a more society-vs-outsiders thriller with a cult-like community and moral gray areas. The problem is it piles on themes and plot turns without shaping them into a sharp, coherent point, so the tension can feel stop-start and the message ends up muddled rather than provocative. If you want the lean, mean, nasty simplicity of earlier Wrong Turn entries, this one may feel like a detour into self-serious world-building that doesn’t fully pay off, even though it still delivers bursts of nasty violence and a few effective survival-horror moments. Best suited for viewers who don’t mind a messier, talkier horror-thriller and are mainly here for the R-rated brutality and the premise, not a tight or particularly original ride.
