Last Letter (2018)
All Yuan Zhinan has left behind when she passed away is a letter and an invitation to a school reunion. Attending the reunion in lieu of her late elder sister, Zhihua accidentally runs into Yin Chuan, on whom she had a crush in her youth. As old memories are evoked, and correspondences travel through different contexts and times, Zhihua slowly uncovers the intricate story of the trio.
What people think about Last Letter
Last Letter feels like opening a drawer of carefully kept memories and finding they still have a pulse—tender, bittersweet, and quietly profound. It draws you in with naturalistic, unshowy cinematography and performances that don’t beg for tears so much as earn them, as letters and recollections ripple across time with a graceful, interwoven rhythm. The romance here isn’t glossy; it’s lived-in, the kind that understands how longing can survive adulthood and how grief can sharpen what we once took for granted. If you prefer your dramas brisk and plot-driven it may feel deliberately gentle, but if you’re in the mood for something beautiful and genuinely touching, this one lingers like a song you can’t quite stop humming.
Last Letter (2018) is clearly aiming for a tender, time-spanning romance about grief, memory, and the way people rewrite their past through letters and reunions. The problem is the storytelling can feel convoluted and oddly unconvincing, piling on subplots that slow everything down and muddy what should be an intimate emotional through-line. If you’re coming for a strong, present-tense romance, you may find it surprisingly light on sparks and a bit too fond of saccharine melodrama instead of earned feeling. That said, if you enjoy wistful nostalgia, gentle performances, and don’t mind a meandering structure in exchange for mood, you might still find it soothing rather than frustrating.
