Three Husbands (2018)

Three Husbands is special because it refuses to treat desire as mere provocation; Fruit Chan turns it into a strange, salty Hong Kong fable that’s at once bawdy, tender, and quietly political. Set on a boat and driven by a heroine who works and loves with almost mythic intensity, the film plays like satire with a pulse—earthy, funny, and then suddenly, disarmingly poetic. It’s not subtle, and the explicit sexuality is constant (definitely not for the squeamish), but beneath the extremes are moments of real poignancy that sneak up on you. Three Husbands is clearly trying to use relentless, explicit sex as a blunt instrument of satire—painting contemporary Hong Kong as feverish, transactional, and spiritually stuck—through the oddball setup of a sex worker living on a boat with three devoted husbands. The problem is that the film often feels more like an endurance test than a pointed critique: the “bump and grind” can swamp whatever complexity it’s reaching for, leaving the story shaggy, unfocused, and strangely repetitive.
