Queenpins (2021)

Queenpins is the kind of caper comedy that takes an everyday frustration—being nickel-and-dimed by big companies—and spins it into a gleefully outrageous, surprisingly satisfying crime spree. Kristen Bell and Kirby Howell-Baptiste click with the easy rhythm of real friends, turning suburban boredom into a buoyant, fast-moving hustle that’s less about menace than mischief, with Vince Vaughn adding a laid-back countercurrent as the pursuit ramps up. The tone stays light and crowd-pleasing, full of sharp one-liners and “I can’t believe this is (basically) true” twists, making it an ideal watch when you want something funny without anything too heavy. It won’t convert you if you crave hard-edged crime or deep satire, but if you’re on the fence, this is a charming, high-energy ride that knows exactly how to have fun with its premise.

Queenpins is clearly trying to be a breezy, “regular people beat the system” crime comedy, and the real-life-inspired premise has enough novelty to hook you at first. The problem is it often settles for loud, lowbrow gags and a scattered story, so the momentum keeps sputtering just when it should be escalating. Kristen Bell and Kirby Howell-Baptiste are likable and game, and Vince Vaughn adds some easy charm, but the movie doesn’t quite know whether it wants to be a sharp caper or a goofy hangout, and it ends up feeling longer than it needs to. If you’re craving a tight, clever heist with bite, you’ll probably be annoyed; if you’re fine with a mildly raunchy, middle-of-the-road comedy carried by a good cast, it’ll do the job.
