The Assistant (2020)

The Assistant is special because it turns the smallest office rituals—coffee runs, inbox triage, the quiet dread of a ringing phone—into a gripping moral pressure cooker, all without resorting to sensationalism. Kitty Green’s direction is precise and minimalist, letting the hum of fluorescent lights and the tight geometry of cubicles build a claustrophobic atmosphere that feels uncomfortably real. Julia Garner gives a remarkable, internal performance, making Jane’s watchfulness and mounting unease as compelling as any thriller, even though the film stays firmly in drama’s quiet register. It’s a deliberately restrained, bleak watch—more a slow burn of recognition than a cathartic takedown—but if you want a sharply observant film that understands how systems enable harm, it’s hard to shake.

The Assistant is trying to show how workplace abuse survives not through big, dramatic incidents, but through routine, silence, and people looking the other way—and it commits hard to that idea. It’s deliberately quiet, observational, and repetitive, so if you’re expecting a plot-driven drama with revelations, catharsis, or any real confrontation, you may find it frustratingly subdued. The dread comes from what’s implied and normalized rather than what’s shown, which can feel powerful or, depending on your taste, like the film is holding back. Julia Garner is excellent and the atmosphere is sharply controlled, but this is more a slow, oppressive experience than an “important movie” that delivers emotional release.
