The Brutalist (2024)

The Brutalist is the kind of big, bracing historical drama that feels carved out of stone: a sweeping immigrant story where art, ambition, and survival collide in postwar America with a rare sense of scale. Brady Corbet stages it with austere, ravishing images that make architecture feel like destiny, while Adrien Brody gives a haunted, fiercely intelligent performance that pulls you close even when the world around him turns cold. The vibe is grand and exacting—part American dream, part moral pressure-cooker—as a wealthy patron’s “opportunity” becomes its own form of control, and the film keeps tightening that tension without resorting to easy villains. It’s not for everyone, especially given its intense, adult content and deliberate pacing, but if you want a serious, visually stunning epic about what it costs to rebuild a life and a legacy, this one stays with you.

The Brutalist is clearly aiming for a grand, old-school immigrant epic about art, trauma, and the price of building something lasting in postwar America, and you can feel Brady Corbet reaching for that sweeping seriousness. The problem is it often plays more like an endurance test than a drama: the pacing is heavy, the mood is relentlessly bleak, and the characters can feel observed from a distance rather than truly lived-in, especially as it stretches into a long second half. If you want catharsis, warmth, or even a briskly told rise-and-fall story, this may leave you cold and drained rather than moved. That said, Adrien Brody brings a haunted intensity and the film’s sense of period and architectural ambition is striking, so patient viewers who like severe, punishing prestige dramas may find it worth the sit (just know it’s also firmly R-rated for explicit sexual content, nudity, and drug use).
