Z takes the familiar “imaginary friend” idea and turns it into a tightly wound pressure cooker, where the real terror isn’t just what might be lurking in the dark, but what a family is willing to dismiss in daylight. Brandon Christensen stages scares with patience and precision, letting dread seep into ordinary rooms until even a child’s toy feels like a threat, and the film’s atmosphere stays clammy long after a scene ends. Keegan Connor Tracy gives the story a grounded, human center, selling the exhaustion and fear of a parent realizing the rules have changed, while the movie delivers jolts that feel earned rather than cheap. It’s not for viewers who shy away from intense child-in-peril anxiety or psychologically charged horror, but if you want a lean, effective thriller that knows exactly how to make you look twice at an empty hallway, this one delivers.

Z (2019) is clearly aiming for that classic “imaginary friend turns sinister” slow-burn, mixing family stress and childhood fear into a contained, suburban nightmare. The problem is it leans hard on jump scares and familiar beats, so if you’re hoping for something genuinely unpredictable or psychologically rich, it can start to feel like it’s going through the motions. The back half tries to escalate into bigger, weirder territory, but the story can get messy and the ending may leave you feeling more annoyed than satisfied. That said, it’s competently made with a committed child performance and some effectively nasty tension, so if you just want a brisk, creepy night with a few solid jolts, it’ll do the job.
