Russ Millings has just been released from prison after serving 21 years for a 3rd strike conviction for possessing an ounce of marijuana. As he tries to adapt to a world he doesn’t recognize – including trying to learn how to use the internet – he finds an abandoned baby in a dumpster behind the fast food restaurant where he works as a dishwasher. Unsure of what to do, and caught between impulses of kindness and panic, Russ soon realizes this could be his chance at redemption.

Explained

What people think about Adopt a Highway

Adopt a Highway is the kind of small, quietly arresting drama that sneaks up on you—less about big twists than the tender, hard-earned feeling of watching a life reboot after two decades of being frozen in time. Ethan Hawke gives one of those restrained performances that doesn’t beg for sympathy but earns it, capturing a man who can barely navigate the modern world yet still reaches, clumsily and sincerely, for decency. Director Logan Marshall-Green keeps the film intimate and human-scaled, finding suspense in everyday panic and hope in tiny acts of care, all without turning the story into easy sentimentality. It’s not for viewers craving a fast pace or neat answers, but if you’re on the fence and want a compassionate character study with unexpected turns and real emotional weight, this one stays with you.
