Egor Korshunov (40) is a Siberian forest guard who works in a local environmental company, fighting fearlessly against poachers in taiga. Egor is a great family man, respected by his fellow villagers. He and his wife Natalia are expecting a second child. Unexpectedly, Egor finds out that he has terminal cancer and has only two months left to live. No traditional medicine or shamanic magic can save Egor. Finally, left with no other options, he decides to take the last desperate step. He attempts to completely change his identity in order to fool the oncoming death, just like Zhamba the drake, the hero of a legendary ancient Siberian epos, did.

Explained

What people think about The Man Who Surprised Everyone

The Man Who Surprised Everyone is the kind of drama that feels genuinely alive: rooted in the rough, wind-bitten reality of Siberian village life, yet daring enough to turn a mythic idea into something urgent and human. It’s a quiet film with a rebellious pulse, following a respected family man who, faced with an unbearable deadline, chooses a radical reinvention—not as a gimmick, but as a last, fiercely personal act of will. The naturalistic style and remarkable performances keep it grounded even as it pushes into transgressive territory, asking big questions about identity, dignity, and what we’ll risk to keep living. It won’t be for viewers who want comfort or easy answers, but if you’re open to a bold, thought-provoking story that lingers long after the credits, it’s absolutely worth your time.
