Medieval (2022)

Medieval has the rare confidence to treat history like lived experience: muddy, clangorous, and morally complicated, with battles staged not as pageantry but as desperate, close-quarters survival. Petr Jákl gives the film a rugged, handsome look—smoke, steel, and torchlight—while Ben Foster anchors it with a ferocious, wounded intensity that makes Jan Žižka feel less like a legend and more like a man being forged into one. The intrigue moves with a pulpy momentum, but the real selling point is how the action is shot: clear, physical, and punishing, the kind that leaves you feeling the weight of every choice. Fair warning, it’s emphatically not a genteel costume drama—the violence is graphic and the world is bleak—but if you want a medieval epic that feels tactile, propulsive, and earned, this one delivers.

Medieval is clearly aiming for gritty, mud-and-blood historical action that turns Jan Žižka into a rough-edged folk hero, and on a purely visceral level it delivers: the battles are brutal, the atmosphere is convincingly harsh, and Ben Foster brings real intensity. The problem is the story around the violence feels thin and oddly hard to follow, with rushed political setup, murky motivations, and pacing that lurches between exposition and chaos rather than building momentum. It also takes itself very seriously, so if you’re not already invested in this slice of history, the heavy tone and clunky dialogue can make the whole thing feel longer than it is.
