Peninsula (2020)

Peninsula is special because it refuses to be a mere retread of its predecessor, widening the apocalypse into a full-throttle, neon-lit action nightmare that plays like a zombie movie spliced with a desperate heist. Yeon Sang-ho keeps the momentum high with nerve-jangling chases, crunchy set pieces, and a world that feels bigger, meaner, and unpredictably alive, even when it’s crawling with the dead. Amid the mayhem, the film finds an unexpectedly human pulse in its small group of survivors—especially the kids, whose presence adds grit, charm, and just enough hope to make the danger sting. It’s not for viewers who want slow-burn dread or subtle gore (the violence is intense), but if you’re on the fence and crave an entertaining, ambitious thrill ride with real forward drive, Peninsula delivers.

Peninsula is clearly trying to widen the Train to Busan world into a bigger, louder post-apocalyptic action ride, with car chases, shootouts, and non-stop momentum. The problem is that the zombie horror and emotional punch get pushed aside for spectacle that often feels videogame-y, with CGI and set pieces that can look more synthetic than scary. The plot runs on familiar beats and the characters don’t get the same depth or tension-building that made the first film hit so hard, so it can feel exhausting rather than gripping. If you want a slick, chaotic action-thriller with zombies as background mayhem, you’ll probably have fun; if you’re coming for suspense, grounded realism, or another gut-punch drama, this one may disappoint.
