Avengement (2019)
While on a prison furlough, a lowly criminal evades his guards and returns to his old stomping ground to take revenge on the people who turned him into a cold blooded killer.
What people think about Avengement
Avengement is the kind of lean, mean revenge thriller that doesn’t just deliver action—it makes every punch feel like it has history behind it, with Scott Adkins giving a ferociously committed performance that’s as wounded as it is dangerous. Jesse V. Johnson stages bone-crunching fights with a gritty clarity, then lets the profane British-gangster banter crackle in between, creating a nasty little pressure-cooker vibe that keeps tightening. It’s not reinventing the genre, but it moves with such bruised intensity and hard-edged momentum that you stop caring about familiarity and start bracing for impact. Fair warning: the violence is graphic and the language is constant, so if you’re not up for something brutally raw, this won’t be your night—but if you are, it’s a cathartic, adrenaline-soaked ride.
Avengement is trying to be a stripped-down, pub-to-prison revenge thriller that exists mainly to showcase Scott Adkins as a battered, furious wrecking ball, and on that level it largely delivers. The problem is the story is basically a clothesline for fights: familiar beats, thin character work, and a “how we got here” narration that can feel like it’s just shuttling you to the next brawl. The violence and language are relentless and often graphic, so if you’re not specifically in the mood for nasty, close-quarters brutality, this will feel like punishment rather than entertainment. If you do want raw, hard-hitting action with a grimy British crime vibe, Adkins’ physical performance and the choreography give it more bite than the plot does.
