I Trapped the Devil is the kind of horror film that earns its chills with mood, not mayhem—an intimate, single-house pressure cooker where Christmas lights and family obligation curdle into something genuinely unsettling. Josh Lobo turns a simple basement door into a bottomless source of dread, letting the camera linger just long enough for your imagination to do the worst work, while Scott Poythress, AJ Bowen, and Susan Burke ground the madness in raw, believable emotion. The vibe is a slow-burn mystery-drama soaked in paranoia, where every conversation feels like it could be an intervention or an exorcism, and the tension keeps tightening even when nothing “happens.” If you want big set pieces and constant shocks, it may feel deliberately restrained—but if you like horror that creeps under your skin through atmosphere, performance, and the fear of not knowing what’s behind the door, this one is a terrific watch.

I Trapped the Devil is clearly aiming for a claustrophobic, Christmas-set pressure cooker where you’re never sure if you’re watching a supernatural nightmare or a family crisis spiraling out of control. The problem is it leans so hard on slow-burn dread and ambiguity that if you’re expecting big scares, clear answers, or a satisfying “here’s what it all meant” payoff, you may feel strung along rather than thrilled. A lot of the runtime is tense conversations, wary glances, and mounting paranoia, which works if you enjoy mood pieces but can feel draggy if you want momentum. On the plus side, the performances sell the emotional damage, and the confined setting has a grim, uneasy atmosphere—just don’t go in hoping it turns into a crowd-pleasing horror ride.
