Mama's Boy (2018)

Mama’s Boy (Qalb Ummuh) has a wonderfully mischievous comic hook—one that turns a tough, swaggering gang leader into something he never expected—and it uses that premise to squeeze out real laughs without ever feeling mean-spirited. Director Amr Salah keeps the pace brisk and the tone bright, letting Hesham Maged play the escalating identity whiplash with charming precision while the supporting cast leans into the absurdity in just the right key. Beneath the silliness, there’s a surprisingly warm pulse about family, grief, and the strange ways people find connection, which gives the movie more staying power than a typical gag machine. If you prefer grounded, realistic comedy, the setup may feel a bit broad—but if you’re open to a high-concept Egyptian crowd-pleaser with heart (literally), this one goes down easy.

Mama’s Boy is clearly aiming for a high-concept, heartfelt comedy: a tough gang leader gets a heart transplant and suddenly starts “mothering” the son of the donor, leaning into Egyptian humor and sentiment. The central gag is funny in bursts, especially if you enjoy Hesham Maged and Shiko’s style, but the premise is stretched for a full runtime and the emotional beats can feel a bit manufactured rather than earned. If you’re expecting a darker edge, bigger action, or any kind of graphic medical/violent payoff, it stays pretty tame and plays it safe. Still, if you want a light, oddball body-swap-adjacent comedy with mild drama and minimal intensity, it’s an easy enough watch.
