Child's Play (2019)

Child’s Play (2019) earns its keep by updating the nightmare for the age of smart homes and always-on devices, turning a familiar killer-doll idea into something that feels unnervingly current. It’s brisk, nasty, and surprisingly funny, with a mischievous streak that knows exactly when to wink and when to go for the throat, while Mark Hamill’s voice work gives Chucky a chilling, oddly childlike presence. Aubrey Plaza grounds the mayhem with a frazzled, believable warmth, making the escalation hit harder even as the movie revels in its gleefully over-the-top set pieces. Fair warning: it’s very bloody and proudly mean-spirited at times, but if you like your horror with dark-comic bite and high energy, this one is a wickedly good time.

The problem is it often explains itself to death, which drains the doll of mystique and turns what should be creeping dread into a string of noisy set pieces. The characters are thinly sketched, so when the body count ramps up, it can feel more like a mean-spirited gag reel than a genuinely scary ride—especially if you’re hoping for suspense over splatter. If you want gruesome, R-rated mayhem with a few darkly funny beats (and a committed voice performance from Mark Hamill), you might have fun; if you’re after real menace, tight logic, or emotional weight, this probably isn’t your Chucky.
