The Specials (2019)
For twenty years, Bruno and Malik have lived in a different world—the world of autistic children and teens. In charge of two separate nonprofit organizations (The Hatch & The Shelter), they train young people from underprivileged areas to be caregivers for extreme cases that have been refused by all other institutions. It’s an exceptional partnership, outside of traditional settings, for some quite extraordinary characters.
What people think about The Specials
The Specials is that rare comedy-drama that makes you laugh, then quietly rearranges your sense of what “help” really looks like—messy, improvised, and stubbornly hopeful. Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache bring a lived-in authenticity and a buoyant warmth to a world that cinema often sentimentalizes, letting the humor arise from daily chaos while never turning its vulnerable characters into punchlines. Vincent Cassel and Reda Kateb are terrific as two men running on empathy and exhaustion, and the film’s greatest thrill is watching compassion become a kind of craft, taught and learned in real time. It isn’t a neat, tear-jerker package—there are rough edges and moral gray zones—but if you want something humane, funny, and genuinely affecting, this one earns your time.
The Specials is clearly aiming for a big-hearted, socially conscious dramedy about the messy, unglamorous reality of caring for autistic kids and teens, and it genuinely respects the people at the center of that work. The problem is that the film’s “based-on-real-life” warmth sometimes gets smoothed into a mainstream crowd-pleaser, so the drama can feel loosely stitched and the shifts between comedy, urgency, and sentiment don’t always land cleanly. If you want a sharply structured story with a distinctive style or a truly hard-hitting deep dive, you may find it more worthy than riveting. Still, Cassel and Kateb bring grounded energy, and when the movie focuses on the day-to-day human moments, it earns its emotional payoff.
