The Old Way (2023)

The Old Way feels like a classic revenge western that’s been weathered by time and made more human, with Nicolas Cage giving a stern, quietly haunted performance that reminds you a gun can be holstered but a past can’t. What makes it special is the father-daughter pairing at its center: Ryan Kiera Armstrong doesn’t just keep up, she sharpens the movie, turning their journey into something tense, tender, and surprisingly revealing without ever getting sentimental. Brett Donowho keeps the vibe lean and dusty—measured, gritty, and suspenseful—favoring hard looks, hard choices, and bursts of violence that land because the characters do. If you want a revisionist western that’s more about consequences than cleverness (and you’re fine with R-rated gunplay), this one earns its saddle time.

The Old Way is clearly aiming for a stripped-down, old-school revenge Western with a father-daughter bond at its center, and Nicolas Cage does bring a weary, haunted edge that fits the premise. The problem is it often looks and feels like a budget imitation of better genre classics, with familiar beats you can see coming from a mile away and not much atmosphere to distract you from the predictability. The script flirts with interesting ideas about legacy and emotional numbness, but it rarely digs deep enough to make the characters’ pain land as hard as it should. If you’re craving a fresh, stylish Western or something with real narrative bite, this will likely feel flat; if you just want a straightforward, violent trail-of-revenge with a couple solid Cage moments, it’s serviceable.
