Innocent Witness (2019)

Innocent Witness is the rare courtroom drama that wins you over not with flashy twists, but with a quietly stirring sense of humanity—turning a murder case into a story about how we listen, who we believe, and what compassion can cost. Lee Han keeps the tone warm and intimate even as the legal stakes tighten, and Jung Woo-sung gives the lawyer a lived-in moral friction that makes his choices feel real. But it’s Kim Hyang-gi who anchors the film with a performance of remarkable sensitivity, bringing humor, specificity, and emotional weight without ever feeling like a “lesson.” If you want a cutthroat, high-adrenaline legal thriller this may feel gentle, but if you’re on the fence, this one earns your time by making empathy feel suspenseful.

Innocent Witness is clearly aiming for a heartfelt courtroom drama about conscience, empathy, and learning to see an autistic teenager as a whole person rather than a “case.” The problem is it often takes the safest, most familiar route, with a fairly generic mystery structure and emotional beats you can see coming, so if you’re craving a sharp legal thriller, this may feel soft and predictable. It also risks “othering” Ji-woo by framing her primarily as a lesson for the lawyer’s growth, even when the film is trying to be respectful. Still, the performances—especially Kim Hyang-gi’s—bring sincerity, and if you want a gentle, character-led drama more than a twisty plot, it can be a worthwhile watch.
