Kill Chain (2020)

Kill Chain is the kind of lean, late-night thriller that feels like a single match dropped into gasoline: one hotel-room eruption, and suddenly you’re watching a whole city’s underworld snap into motion with grim, domino-click inevitability. Ken Sanzel keeps the vibe pulpy and nocturnal—crooked cops, desperate hitmen, a femme fatale, and a weary sniper all intersecting in a chain reaction that’s easy to follow but still full of nasty little turns. Nicolas Cage anchors it with a controlled, watchful intensity that makes the quiet moments as tense as the shootouts, and the film’s momentum builds until the larger shape of the night clicks satisfyingly into place. It’s not for the squeamish—violence is frequent and bloody, with some nudity—but if you like hardboiled crime stories that move fast and land mean, it’s a surprisingly entertaining ride.

Kill Chain is clearly trying to be a slick, domino-effect crime thriller where every bad decision triggers the next shootout, and on paper that momentum should feel electric. In practice, the storytelling is choppy and often confusing, with uneven editing and stiff dialogue that make the “chain” feel more like disconnected links than a satisfying escalation. Nicolas Cage brings a bit of eccentric gravitas and there are a few tense, nasty set-pieces, but the film leans heavily on familiar noir-thriller beats without the style or clarity to make them pop. If you’re here for coherent plotting and characters you can actually latch onto, this will likely test your patience; if you just want grim, R-rated violence and a late-night B-movie vibe, you may get enough out of it.
