Beats wants to be a gritty, big-hearted Chicago hip-hop drama about two damaged people finding purpose through music, and in its best moments the performances and atmosphere make that goal feel within reach. The problem is the script leans hard on familiar redemption beats, so a lot of the plot plays out exactly as you expect, with cliché turns that undercut the rawness it’s aiming for. It also stumbles at the finish line: the ending feels rushed and oddly unresolved, like the movie skips a few key emotional steps.
