Beats (2019)
An agoraphobic hip-hop prodigy and a disgraced former music manager cross paths in Chicago’s South Side and help each other face demons of their pasts.
What people think about Beats
Beats has that rare spark where a heartfelt coming-of-age drama and a music movie actually feed each other, building to something uplifting without feeling manufactured. Set against the lived-in textures of Chicago’s South Side and steeped in a lovingly captured 90s vibe, it moves with the pulse of hip-hop—energizing when it needs to be, tender when it matters most. Anthony Anderson delivers a performance with real weight and warmth, anchoring a fragile, funny, hard-earned friendship that feels honest rather than inspirational-by-design. It won’t be for viewers who want a glossy, sugar-rush crowd-pleaser, but if you’re open to a realistic story about talent, trauma, and the small acts of trust that change a life, this one hits.
Beats wants to be a gritty, big-hearted Chicago hip-hop drama about two damaged people finding purpose through music, and in its best moments the performances and atmosphere make that goal feel within reach. The problem is the script leans hard on familiar redemption beats, so a lot of the plot plays out exactly as you expect, with cliché turns that undercut the rawness it’s aiming for. It also stumbles at the finish line: the ending feels rushed and oddly unresolved, like the movie skips a few key emotional steps. If you’re here primarily for authentic, standout music and a tight, surprising story, you may leave disappointed—but if you can tolerate a formulaic arc for some solid character chemistry and a Chicago vibe, it’s watchable.
