Jens Jonsson stages the story with sleek, glamorous visual elegance—cocktail lounges, hotel corridors, and occupied-city shadows—that turns history into a tense, seductive atmosphere you can practically breathe. Ingrid Bolsø Berdal is terrific as Sonja Wigert, projecting both movie-star poise and the private panic of a woman forced to perform for people who could destroy her, while the film keeps tightening the screws without resorting to cheap twists. If you’re expecting nonstop action, this is more about pressure, ambiguity, and the cost of survival, but if you like thrillers that look beautiful while they quietly break your heart, it’s hard to resist.

The Spy wants to be a classy, morally thorny WWII thriller about a celebrity forced into double-agent hell, and it has the right ingredients: real stakes, glamorous access to power, and a lead performance from Ingrid Bolsø Berdal that keeps Sonja human under pressure. The problem is the screenplay’s stop-start structure—lots of short scenes that feel like checkpoints rather than escalation—so the tension doesn’t always build into the gripping, inevitable spiral this story deserves. If you’re coming for a tight, propulsive espionage ride with clean momentum, you may find the pacing frustrating and the drama oddly muted. But if you’re more interested in the uncomfortable compromises of survival and a period piece atmosphere than pure thriller mechanics, it’s still worth your time.
