Great White (2021)
A sea plane is destroyed in a freak accident, five people find themselves drifting on a raft. At the mercy of the tide and with no hope of rescue, the helpless situation takes a horrifying turn when they are terrorized by a ravenous great white.
What people think about Great White
Great White earns its bite the old-fashioned way: by trapping you in a clean, primal predicament and letting the ocean do the rest. Director Martin Wilson turns open water into a claustrophobic arena, using crisp above-and-below-the-surface imagery and steady camerawork to keep your eyes scanning every ripple, while the effects sell the danger without winking at it. The cast plays the fear and friction convincingly, so the suspense feels earned rather than manufactured, tightening scene by scene as hope thins out. If you want a shark movie that’s more survival-thriller than splashy spectacle—and you can handle moderate gore and tension—this one is an efficient, nerve-raking watch.
Great White is clearly aiming for a tight, back-to-basics survival thriller: a small group stranded at sea, tensions rising, and a shark turning bad luck into a nightmare. The problem is it leans so hard on repeating the same “shark shows up, people panic” beats that the suspense starts to feel mechanical, and the characters aren’t vivid enough to make you truly invest in who makes it. The shark effects and overly frequent appearances also undercut the fear factor, because once you can see the seams, it stops being scary and starts being something you wait out. If you’re happy with a simple, lean creature feature and don’t mind middling CGI, it’s serviceable; if you want smart survival problem-solving, strong character work, or genuinely escalating terror, this probably isn’t your raft.
