Flee (2021)

Flee is special because it turns a real-life confession into something both intimate and cinematic, using animation not as a gimmick but as a way to protect a person while letting his memories breathe with haunting clarity. The tone is quietly urgent—part reflective therapy session, part survival story—moving with the honesty of a documentary and the emotional precision of a great animated drama. Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s direction feels tactful and deeply humane, giving Amin the space to speak about fear, identity, and the long aftershocks of running without ever turning him into a symbol instead of a human being. It’s not an easy watch at times, and the subject matter can be distressing, but if you’re on the fence, know that this is one of those rare films that leaves you feeling not manipulated, but changed.

Flee is clearly trying to do something ambitious: use animation to protect a real person while letting him finally tell a refugee story and a long-held personal truth on his own terms. It’s often powerful and respectful, with striking visuals and moments that land hard, especially when it brushes up against real archival footage. The catch is that the same storytelling choice that makes it safe and artful can also make it feel a bit emotionally remote, like you’re watching a carefully curated account rather than truly sitting in the room with Amin. If you need documentaries to feel intimate and immediate, or you’re sensitive to distressing themes around war, trafficking, and implied sexual violence, this may be more admirable than “enjoyable” for you.
