The Two Popes (2019)

The Two Popes is the rare “important” historical drama that feels alive: a witty, intimate duel of ideas that gradually becomes a deeply human conversation about doubt, conscience, and what change really costs. Fernando Meirelles keeps the film moving with elegant pacing and surprising warmth, letting Rome’s grandeur frame what is essentially a chamber piece powered by language, silence, and the music of two minds colliding. Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins are so richly inhabited—funny, prickly, vulnerable—that you stop watching “leaders” and start listening to two lonely men trying to make peace with themselves. It’s talky by design and gently theological at times, so it may not be for viewers craving action, but if you want smart writing, great chemistry, and a drama that’s both accessible and quietly profound, it’s an easy recommendation.

The Two Popes is clearly aiming for a thoughtful, human-scale look at two very different men wrestling with faith, guilt, and the future of the Church, and it mostly delivers that through sharp, intimate dialogue. The catch is that it’s essentially a two-hander talk piece dressed up as history, so if you want sweeping Vatican intrigue or a hard-hitting deep dive into institutional wrongdoing, you may find it a bit constrained, simplified, and occasionally too tidy. The pacing leans on long conversations and explanatory flashbacks that can feel more like illustrating points than building truly surprising drama. Still, if you’re willing to accept a somewhat streamlined take, Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins are excellent company, and the film’s warmth and wit make the heavy themes easier to sit with.
