At the center is Trine Dyrholm, delivering a performance so controlled and so ferociously alive that you can’t look away, even when you want to. It’s provocative and psychologically gripping rather than comforting, so if you prefer tidy morality tales, this may not be your evening—but if you want a fearless film that lingers under your skin, it’s essential viewing.

Queen of Hearts is aiming for a cold, clinical dissection of power, privilege, and self-deception inside a “perfect” family—and it commits to that discomfort without flinching. The problem is that the film’s bleak, disturbing premise can feel less like a hard truth and more like a provocation, especially if you need clear moral framing or satisfying consequences to stay engaged. It’s also deliberately slow and sometimes on-the-nose in its dialogue, which can make the runtime feel longer than it is. That said, the performances (especially Trine Dyrholm) are razor-sharp and the direction is controlled; just don’t go in expecting catharsis, justice, or a comforting point of view.
