Vivarium (2019)

Vivarium takes the everyday dream of a starter home and turns it into a sleek, unnerving puzzle box, the kind of high-concept sci-fi horror that feels like a lost Twilight Zone episode shot with modern precision. Lorcan Finnegan’s controlled style makes the identical cul-de-sac world strangely beautiful and deeply wrong, while Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg ground the escalating nightmare with believable, bruised humanity. The film’s dread doesn’t come from cheap shocks so much as the slow, claustrophobic certainty that the rules have changed and no one will explain them. It’s not for viewers who need tidy answers or a breezy pace, but if you like your thrillers original, atmospheric, and faintly existential, this one burrows in and stays there.

Vivarium is clearly aiming for a nasty little sci-fi fable about suburban conformity and the horror of being boxed into a life you didn’t choose, and the premise is genuinely creepy. The problem is it reveals its main trick early, then keeps circling the same nightmare with pacing that can feel repetitive rather than escalating, so if you need plot momentum and clear answers you may end up bored and irritated. It’s at its best as an atmosphere piece—Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg sell the mounting desperation, and the sterile, identical neighborhood is memorably unsettling. If you enjoy bleak, allegorical slow-burns that prioritize mood over payoff, it might work; if you want a tight thriller with satisfying development, this probably isn’t your home.
