Climax (2018)

Climax is a fever dream you don’t just watch—you get pulled into it, starting with a jaw-dropping burst of choreography that feels like pure human electricity before the night curdles into something far more primal. Gaspar Noé turns an empty school into a pressure cooker, using Benoît Debie’s roaming, hypnotic camerawork and a relentless, pulse-ratcheting soundtrack (with a throb of Thomas Bangalter’s influence) to make the room feel like it’s breathing. The performances sell the whole descent because these dancers move like virtuosos even when panic, paranoia, and fractured desire start rewriting the rules of gravity. It’s not for everyone—this is intense, explicit, and deliberately upsetting—but if you can handle a bold, technically brilliant plunge into chaos, it’s the kind of movie that leaves you shaken and weirdly exhilarated.

Climax is trying to be a sensory gut-punch: a dance-film high that curdles into a full-blown panic attack, more about escalating mood and physical chaos than tidy storytelling. If you need a coherent plot, believable dialogue, or characters you can actually latch onto, this will likely feel like two great set pieces stitched to a lot of shrieking, cruelty, and repetition. The violence, sexuality, and drug-fueled hysteria aren’t just “edgy” background—they’re the whole point, and the camera traps you in it until it becomes exhausting rather than thrilling. That said, the choreography, sound design, and hypnotic long takes are genuinely impressive, so if you’re up for an intense, nihilistic endurance test, it delivers exactly that.
