The Nest (2020)

The Nest is special because it turns a familiar story of ambition into a slow, exquisitely controlled pressure cooker, where every nice room and polite smile feels like it’s hiding a crack in the foundation. Sean Durkin directs with a cool, exacting eye, letting the unease seep in through small domestic details until the whole film hums with dread, not from jump scares but from the terror of a life built on appearances. Jude Law is magnetic as a man who can sell anyone a dream, while Carrie Coon gives a quietly ferocious performance as the person forced to live inside it, and their scenes together feel like watching a marriage negotiate with gravity. It’s not a crowd-pleaser and it doesn’t offer easy catharsis, but if you like adult dramas that are tense, atmospheric, and painfully observant about money, power, and love, it’s a bracingly good watch.

The Nest is aiming for a slow-burn dissection of ambition, marriage, and the seductive rot of keeping up appearances, using 1980s England as a chilly pressure cooker. It’s well-acted (Carrie Coon in particular does a lot with very little) and the atmosphere is tense, but the film is deliberately restrained and emotionally withholding, so if you’re waiting for big confrontations or a clean, satisfying “payoff,” you may feel like it’s all build-up and no release. The pacing is patient to the point of punishing, and the ambiguity can read as realism or as the movie refusing to commit, depending on your tolerance for unresolved discomfort. If you like character-driven dramas that simmer and sting rather than entertain, it’ll work; if you want momentum, catharsis, or clear answers, this probably isn’t your night.
