Maharshi (2019)

Maharshi works because it takes the glossy fantasy of a self-made billionaire and asks him to pay the emotional bill, turning a star-driven action drama into something with real heart and a conscience. Mahesh Babu brings an easy charisma that makes the transformation feel earned, while Allari Naresh grounds the film with a friendship that’s tender, bruised, and believable, and the cinematography and score give the whole journey a big-screen sweep that’s both polished and stirring. The vibe is equal parts crowd-pleasing and sincere: punchy set pieces and rousing speeches, yes, but also a steady undercurrent of regret, gratitude, and responsibility. It’s not for everyone if you’re allergic to message-forward melodrama or prefer your dramas tightly understated, but if you want an uplifting, well-mounted film that mixes emotion with adrenaline and leaves you feeling like it meant something, Maharshi delivers.

Maharshi is clearly trying to be an inspirational star-vehicle about ambition, friendship, and using privilege to fight for farmers, and it does have a sincere social-message streak plus a committed Mahesh Babu at the center. The problem is it delivers that message with a very familiar, paint-by-numbers plot and a narration style that spells out feelings instead of letting scenes earn them. At nearly three hours, the pacing drags, especially in the second half, where the conflict and “big moments” can feel stretched and repetitive rather than gripping. If you enjoy glossy, crowd-pleasing dramas with speeches, sentiment, and a larger-than-life hero arc, you’ll likely be fine; if you want tighter storytelling, nuance, or surprises, this may test your patience.
