Sauvage (2018)

Sauvage is special because it refuses to turn street life into a lecture or a spectacle; it simply stays close to Léo, letting his hunger for affection feel as urgent as his need to survive. Félix Maritaud gives a fearless, deeply human performance—raw, funny, bruised, and oddly radiant—that makes you care even when the film won’t soften the world around him. Camille Vidal-Naquet’s camera has an unsentimental tenderness, finding flashes of warmth and dignity in places most movies only glance at, and the result is emotionally powerful without ever begging for pity. Fair warning: it’s extremely explicit and intense, so it’s not for everyone, but if you can handle that candor, you’ll find a compassionate, authentic drama that lingers like a heartbeat you can’t ignore.

Sauvage is aiming for an unvarnished, compassionate portrait of a young homeless sex worker chasing real affection in a world that mostly treats him as disposable. It’s also extremely explicit and relentless about it—graphic sex, heavy drug use, and bleak street-life scenes aren’t occasional shocks, they’re the film’s language, so if you need distance or subtlety, this will feel punishing rather than profound. The story is deliberately loose and repetitive, with a passive central character, which can read as honest realism or, depending on your patience, like watching the same wound get reopened without much narrative movement.
